Sharks in Training

Sharks in Training is a developmental program for swimmers ages 4 - 10 who are building the skills and confidence needed to join the Sugar Land Sharks swim team. Designed for children with basic swim knowledge who can follow instructions, this program focuses on improving stamina, confidence, and stroke fundamentals in a fun, supportive team enviroment. It's the perfect bridge between swim lessons and swim team participation.

How does it work?

Swimmers interested in the Sharks in Training will register during normal registration and indicate they are interested in the Sharks in Training Program. The swimmer must attend team tryouts (see Try-Out Info tab) for initial evaluation. If not ready for team competition, then they will be recommended to the Sharks in Training Program. To participate in the Sharks in Training Program, your swimmer(s) MUST be able to do the following:

  • Confidence to be in the water without external support (floaties/parents/etc.)
  • Has basic swimming knowledge (no strokes required).
  • Can blow bubbles and put head in water.

If at Try-Outs your swimmer(s) is unable to do the above skills, then she/he will not be allowed to participate in the Sharks in Training Program and will be refunded their registration fee minus insurance fees.

Becoming a Shark

  • If at ANY TIME your child is able to swim for the ENTIRE length of the pool without holding onto the lane rope or touching the bottom, then he/she will graduate to the competitive team and become a SHARK!
  • The Head Coach as the final decision on if the swimmer is ready to graduate from the program.
  • Parents of Sharks in Training are not required to complete volunteer requirements unless their child moves to the competitive team. At that time, the volunteer coordinator will be in contact to scheulde volunteer hours.
  • If your child has NOT been moved to the competitive team by June 5, 2026, then they will receive a participation certificate and will be encouraged to try again the following year.
